5 Common HVAC Installation Mistakes That Will Cost You

5 Common HVAC Installation Mistakes That Will Cost YouHVAC systems have been around a long time now, so you would think most contractors would have installation down pat. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. When HVAC installation is done incorrectly, it will likely run inefficiently, costing the homeowner more money on utilities, and perhaps wearing out parts before their time and even causing a breakdown.

Here are five of the most common installation mistakes to watch out for:

1. System sized incorrectly.

This is a common problem, with systems sized either too big or too small. Too big, and the system will turn off and on continuously, never achieving temperature set points, while wearing out parts. Too small, and the system will struggle to heat and cool, running continuously. Consultants should use industry software, known as Manual J, to size heating and cooling loads in the home, and Manual S to size equipment.

2. Inadequate ductwork.

Ductwork should be able to handle a certain volume of air to adequately cool or heat a home. Sometimes, contractors use old ductwork with newer, larger capacity systems, resulting in inadequate cooling or heating.

3. Poor ductwork design.

There are several basic configurations for ductwork, but design may have to be adjusted, depending on the home design. Poorly designed ductwork can cause hot and cold spots and excess noise, while forcing the system to work harder to heat and cool. Inferior ductwork design may also encompass the use of shoddy materials and poor installation techniques.

4. Poor condensate drain design.

HVAC systems require condensate drains to get rid of waste water, as moisture is pulled from the air during the heating and cooling process. If the moisture isn’t properly discarded, you may encounter leaks and floods that damage your home.

5. Poor exhaust design.

Gases from the combustion process must be exhausted from the system to ensure your home is free of carbon monoxide. Dampers and exhaust flues should be sized right and properly installed for maximum safety.
