4 Tips for Quieting Your Air Conditioning Unit

4 Tips for Quieting Your Air Conditioning UnitWhat’s that racket? Chances are it could be your air conditioning unit. It’s not out of the ordinary for A/C systems to make noise during startup or operation. Eventually, those noises may get loud enough to become a nuisance to occupants in your home and even your next door neighbors.

Quieting A/C systems isn’t as difficult as you might think. The following offers a few tips that could go a long way towards restoring peace to your backyard.

  • Have your A/C unit checked out by a HVAC technician first. You’ll want to make sure there aren’t any mechanical problems with your A/C unit that could create excess noise.
  • Build a fence around your A/C unit. Solid wood fencing can help deflect and reduce noise caused by your A/C system, plus it also has the side benefit of keeping your A/C unit out of view of neighbors and potential thieves. Adding acoustical panels to your fencing or enclosure can also quiet your A/C system even further.
  • Surround your A/C compressor with a sound blanket. Sound blankets can be effective at isolating the noises made by your A/C compressor, reducing your noise your system makes overall.
  • Replace your A/C unit’s condenser fan. Older A/C units tend to have noisy condenser fans, so replacing your old fan with a newer one could go a long way towards quieting your A/C system. Your new fan will also use less energy than the previous fan, which can help reduce your energy costs.

If the above tips don’t do much to solve your air conditioner’s noise issues, it may be time to replace it with a newer unit that’s actually designed to be quieter than previous models. It may seem like an expensive solution, but you may be able to offset the initial purchase price of your new A/C system with the energy savings you’ll enjoy throughout its service life.
