Why Insulation is Important During Summer, Too

Why Insulation is Important During Summer, TooFor most homeowners, using insulation to keep your home warmer in the winter makes sense. After all, you wrap up in a blanket or coat to stay warm, so why shouldn’t your house? What many homeowners don’t know is that the same insulation that helps your home stay warm in the winter can help it stay cool in the summer.

How Insulation Stops Heat

We need insulation for one simple reason: heat tends to seek out colder areas. When hot air finds a space that’s a lower temperature, it fills the space until the temperatures all around are even.

Insulation acts as a barrier toward heat, slowing down its inevitable move toward cooler air. This is why insulation protects our homes in the winter — it keeps the warm air we’re putting into our homes inside and the cold air out.

The summer is no different. The directions are just reversed. The sun-heated air from outside gets slowed by layers of insulation so that more of our air-conditioned air can stay inside our homes.

Finding the Right Insulation for Your Home

You have several choices when it comes to insulation. Which one is best for you depends on many different factors: the age and construction of your house, the area of the country you live in, your budget, and how long you expect the insulation to last. Here are some options:

Blown Insulation

Blown insulation is economical and reasonably easy to install. However, it but can require cutting holes in the walls if you’re adding it to a pre-existing house. It will pack down over time and provide less insulating power.

Blanket Insulation

Blanket insulation is typically made of fiberglass, but other options are available. Again, the main downside is that blanket insulation will get packed down over time.

Foam Insulation

This type comes in solid sheets or in an expanding, injectable format. Injectable foam insulation is particularly good for filling hard-to-reach places and won’t pack down.
