Should You Repair or Replace? Start the ConversationEvery homeowner reaches a point with an aging central cooling or heating system when the question has to be asked — repair or replace? The answer is not always easy, and it can be stressful worrying about whether you’re making the right decision. We can help you with the repair vs. replace decision. Ask yourself the following questions:

How long has your HVAC system been operating in your home? While the useful service life of a furnace, A/C or heat pump can vary, you should be able to get at least 15 years out of a combustion furnace and 10–15 years from an air conditioner or heat pump. Plus, an HVAC system that gets regular professional maintenance should last longer. If your cooling or heating system is reaching these benchmarks, start watching for tell-tale signs that your system’s days are numbered.

Where do you live? Consider factors that can affect longevity. If you live in an area like New York State, where the winters are long and cold, your furnace will carry the brunt of the workload of conditioning your home, while the A/C will have an easier time of it. Similarly, if your home is properly weatherized, your HVAC systems will work less hard than if your home is drafty and/or lacks insulation.

Are you frequently calling the HVAC service guy? A heating or cooling system that’s reaching the end of its life will start requiring more repairs. You’ll need to decide whether it makes sense to dump more money into a failing system. Multiply the age of your HVAC system by the estimated repair cost. If the number exceeds $4,000, replacement is probably the best option.

Is your system costing more to operate? Often when HVAC systems begin aging, they’ll use more energy to deliver the same output as before. With the high-efficiency cooling and heating systems available today, you’ll often find that replacing that old system makes more sense over the long term.
