Boost Air Conditioner Efficiency This Summer

Boost Air Conditioner Efficiency This Summer | C.R. WolfeBy keeping your air conditioner’s efficiency at its highest possible level, you’ll be able to maintain the best level of indoor comfort at the lowest cost. Here are several practical suggestions you can use to increase air conditioner efficiency in your home this summer.

  • Call for air conditioner maintenance — Schedule a preventive maintenance appointment with your HVAC professional. Your technician will inspect the system from end to end and make adjustments and minor repairs that boost efficiency. As a bonus, regular maintenance will help your HVAC system last for many more years.
  • Change air filters — System air filters should be checked every month and changed when they get clogged and dirty. A dirty air filter reduces airflow through the system, which decreases air conditioner efficiency and performance. In severe cases, clogged filters can also cause damage to the equipment.
  • Reduce excess heat — Reduce heat gain, or the build-up of excess heat inside your home. Close curtains and drapes to keep out heat-producing sunshine. Don’t operate cooking stoves, ovens, or clothes dryers during the hottest part of the day. Make sure your attic is properly ventilated to eliminate excessive heat that can radiate downward into the interior of your home, causing indoor temperatures to increase.
  • Clean the outdoor unit — Clean the air conditioner’s outdoor unit to make sure there are no obstructions interfering with air flow. Clear away grass, mud, sticks, leaves, or other debris. Trim trees, shrubs, and other vegetation to allow plenty of open space on all sides of the outdoor unit.
  • Install a programmable thermostat — Put in a programmable thermostat and take advantage of the efficiency-boosting features they offer. For example, use the thermostat’s set points to reduce indoor cooling when you’re away during the day and automatically increase indoor temperatures before you return home at night.
