Solar Panels: Pros and Cons

Solar Panels: Pros and ConsOver the last several years, solar technology has advanced significantly and, more importantly, prices have been reduced dramatically with mass production. It is now economically feasible to generate a significant portion of your electricity with solar panels at a reasonable cost. If you are considering installing a solar system on your Middletown home, there are a few things that should be considered.

Advantages of Solar Panels

Solar panels can provide your home with essentially free energy, once the initial investment in the equipment has been made, and, unlike power generated by coal or natural gas-burning power plants, it is sustainable, pollution free and environmentally friendly. Each solar panel can last for over 20 or 30 years, and with federal, state and local tax incentives, the initial installation price can be significantly reduced. The federal government, for example, offers a tax credit for up to 30 percent of the cost of a solar system. Additionally, in areas that support net metering, you can even sell any extra power that you make back to the local grid, off-setting some of the costs for electricity that you may use when the sun is not shining.

Disadvantages of Solar Panels

Though solar power can offer inexpensive, pollution-free energy, it also has several disadvantages. The initial investment can be quite large for the average size home if it is designed to meet all household electrical needs, though there are financing programs available to help with the upfront costs. Additionally, because solar power is an intermittent source of power, you will still need a connection to the grid for nighttime power usage, unless a prohibitively expensive battery-based storage system is installed. Finally, your home must have a large amount of space to install a solar system, with plenty of sunshine from the south or west, and not all locations allow solar installations.

In the right circumstances, adding a solar system to your home can reduce your energy bills dramatically, as well as your carbon footprint. To learn more about solar panels, talk to our experts at C.R. Wolfe Heating & Air Conditioning, serving the Middletown area.
