Many of us who live in this part of the country don’t look forward to seeing the first flakes of snow fly. But it’s a fact of life–winter brings snow and ice. And before that happens, it’s a good idea to tend to seasonal home maintenance. How many of your projects remain to be done? To help you, here’s a list of seasonal maintenance tasks that you should get done before it’s too cold to work outside.
- Inspect and clean the gutters. Do this after all the leaves have fallen. Check for loose connections. If your downspouts don’t drain into the city sewers. make sure they extend well away from your home to minimize the possibility of seepage into your foundation.
- Patch peeling paint and repair damaged siding or decking. You can take a more comprehensive approach next spring. A temporary fix will help to prevent any damage over the winter months.
- Check the faucets outside your home and make sure they’re securely turned off. You may also want to disconnect the water from inside your home.
- Seal any air leaks in your home, using caulk and weatherstripping. This is also a good time to insulate any water pipes that are next to exterior walls. Insulation, which is available at most home-improvement stores, will help to keep your pipes from freezing during an extreme-cold snap.
- Change the direction of your ceiling fans. This will allow the fans to push the warm air down to the space you and your family members are occupying.
- Schedule an appointment to have your heating unit professionally cleaned and inspected. Regular maintenance will help your system last longer and keep your energy costs in check. Minor problems can be discovered and corrected before they become major ones.
