These days who isn’t looking for ways to save money? You can start by having a home energy evaluation. Just as your doctor orders a number of lab tests when you see her, a certified energy auditor will run diagnostic tests to determine ways you can make your home more energy efficient.
What can I expect at an audit?
Your home’s evaluation will begin with a series of questions, similar to a doctor’s appointment. The auditor will try to get a sense of the household: How many people live in the home? When does everyone go to work and come home? What is your comfort threshold in the summer? Do you notice any areas that seem drafty or humid?
The auditor will then begin more hands-on testing. Feel free to accompany your auditor and ask questions as he moves through your home. There are a couple of tests that you should expect to see over the course of the day.
- Blower door test: Your technician will install a large fan in one of the exterior doors of your home. Once the fan begins to pull air out of your home, the auditor move through the house to determine areas of air leakage.
- Thermographic inspection: The energy auditor will move through your home with a thermal scanner to detect pockets of hot or cold air that may indicate problems with airflow or insulation. This test is often done in conjunction with the blower door test.
What can I do with this information?
Once the energy evaluation is complete, you will receive a detailed report. There will likely be several low- or no-cost fixes that you can start on right away, like changing your air filter. Other suggestions, such as installing a high efficiency furnace or replacing your windows, will need to be weighed against the overall benefits.
