One of the most effective ways to lower your monthly fuel bill is to buy and install a programmable thermostat. Because non-programmable thermostats are not very accurate, your home may end up hotter or cooler than it needs to be. This means that you’re spending more than you need to — and you’re less comfortable.
Let programmable thermostats take the guesswork out of setting the temperature. Better still, you can program your system so you wake up to a warm, comfortable home on a cold morning, and come back to a pleasant temperature after work without wasting energy.
When choosing a programmable thermostat, consider the lifestyle and needs of your household:
- If you have a fairly regular schedule, a 5+2 model might be appropriate. This lets you set one HVAC schedule over the work week, and another for the weekend.
- If your Saturday and Sunday schedules tend to be different to each other, look for a 5+1+1 model.
- If you have family members who may be home later or earlier on some days of the week (children in after-school activities, or adults with varying work hours, for instance), a seven-day model will allow you to set a separate schedule for each day of the week.
Other features to look out for include:
- Backlit digital displays.
- Phone programming/voice programming.
- Touch-sensitive screens.
- Hold/vacation setting.
- Air filter change reminder indicators.
- Malfunction indicators.
- “Smart recovery” features that determine the time it will take to attain the required temperature and turn on the system in time to warm up/cool down.
