One of the best ways to save on energy bills is to save hot water. No, that doesn’t mean using less than you need, but it does mean eliminating wasted hot water. This can be done by installing low-flow fixtures, fixing leaks, and purchasing an energy-efficient clothes washer and dishwasher.
Fix Leaks
If you have a leak of one drip each second at just one of your fixtures, that can add up to $1 per month in unneeded expense. Imagine what that could be if the drip was more rapid or a steady stream. Simply changing out faucets or showerheads or fixing leaky pipes can make a huge difference.
Low-Flow Fixtures
The federal government has mandated that all new showerhead flow rates cannot be more than 2.5 gallons per minute with a pressure of 80 pounds per square inch. Flow rates for new faucets must not exceed 2.2 gpm at 60 psi or 2.5 gpm at 80 psi. You can save hot water by as much as 60 percent by installing quality low-flow fixtures that can be purchased for as little as $10 to $20 each.
Another way to save hot water is to install a newer model, energy-efficient dishwasher and/or clothes washer. The biggest cost associated with using these appliances comes from the energy needed to heat the water. You can significantly reduce energy bills by switching out your older, less efficient models for Energy Star labeled newer ones.
Many people believe that washing dishes by hand will save hot water, but the truth is that if you are doing this several times each day, it can use up far more water and energy than operating an energy-efficient dishwasher with a full load.
