High Bills? Winter Breezes Inside? Consider an Energy Evaluation

Does your home have drafty rooms? Is your utility bill off the charts? An energy evaluation might be the next step in determining how to resolve these problems. An energy evaluation will “audit” your home’s energy efficiency and measure where efficiency can increase.

Professional energy audits evaluate every aspect of your home’s energy use, like HVAC systems, water and electricity use. The evaluation will include visual inspections of your systems, as well as internal inspections.

While some elements of an energy inspection can certainly be conducted by homeowners, you should consider using a professional to perform an energy audit. They will check your home for air leaks in the attic, walks and windows. They check ductwork and air flow capacity. They inspect heating and cooling equipment and filters for efficiency. They will examine appliances and lighting use, as well.

The evaluation report should include recommendations, costs, savings, and any benefits in energy use, comfort, etc.

There are a couple of evaluations that a professional can do that a homeowner cannot. Professional energy evaluations include the use of “blower doors,” which measure leaks in the home. The blower door sucks all of the air out of the home. As a result, air pressure is lowered. Then, the outside air, whose pressure is now higher than the inside air, will seep in the cracks. This equipment helps to amplify where leaks occur.
